What to see when Volvo Ocean Race comes to Newport

A round-the-world regatta takes a breather, allowing sailing fans a glimpse behind the scenes.

The Volvo Ocean 65 yachts set off on October 11 from Alicante, Spain, for their nine-month, nine-leg seafaring marathon.

Newport’s Fort Adams State Park will serve as Race Village headquarters during the 12-day stopover in May.

In today’s world of virtual reality and ubiquitous video games, it’s difficult to find men and women who still pit muscle, wits, and willpower against the harsh elements.
Difficult, but not impossible.
In early May, local sailing enthusiasts will have the opportunity to see true adventurers when the Volvo Ocean Race yachts sail into Newport, Rhode Island, for a 12-day stopover in their worldwide quest.
Formerly known as the Whitbread Round the World Race, this premier sailing event is held every three years and last visited the region during the 2008-09 edition in Boston. When the competitors complete the final leg at the finish line in Gothenburg, Sweden, they’ll have covered 38,739 nautical miles, the equivalent of 44,580 statute miles.
Newport is the race’s sole US stopover, one of 11 international ports that the nine-month, nine-leg seafaring marathon will visit. A global cast of competitors aboard the six identical 65-foot yachts (a seventh entrant — Team Vestas Wind — ran aground in the Indian Ocean in late November and dropped out) will sail north to the Ocean State from Itajai, Brazil, having already turned the corner around Cape Horn at the tip of South America.

These stopovers allow sailors a mental break after weeks battling enormous waves — and enduring mind-numbing doldrums — on the open ocean, and they give their land-based support teams a chance to make repairs to their $6 million racing yachts. But these mid-race breaks also give sailing fans a chance to meet the world’s most skilled sailors, learn more about the sport, and view some of the planet’s most technologically advanced sailing vessels, which are typically owned by sailing organizations or wealthy individuals and financed by corporate sponsors.
“Stopovers really are our chance to reconnect with the outside world,” says Matt Knighton, 30, the onboard reporter with the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team. “Nothing beats the flotilla of spectator boats that come to greet you several miles out when you arrive.”
Known as the City by the Sea, Newport has a storied sailing past that will also be on full display. An important port prior to the Revolutionary War, Newport emerged after the Civil War as an enclave of the wealthy. Rich industrialists built opulent mansions and imported their pricey pastimes, including sailing. For a half century, from the 1930s to 1983, Newport was home to the famed America’s Cup race, contested in later years by the quintessential 12-meter racing yachts.

All the sailboats in the Volvo Ocean Race have identical designs.

“The Newport stopover means the world to me, personally,” says Charlie Enright, 30, skipper of the US-based Team Alvimedica and a Bristol, Rhode Island, native who was an All-American sailor at Brown University. “It will mean we’ve gotten around the horn, a life goal, and it will mean that I get to share where I’m from with the rest of the world.”
Fort Adams State Park, site of the country’s largest coastal fortress, will be the site of the Race Village, a joint effort of promoters, city and state tourism officials, and several sponsoring organizations, including Sail Newport (Rhode Island’s public sailing center) and Discover Newport.
Race Village is open to all, free of charge. Inside, visitors can explore a cross section of a Volvo Ocean 65 yacht. Organizers voted to adopt a “one-design” platform to ensure the race would be a contest based purely on sailing skill rather than the technological arms race that once characterized the America’s Cup, as competitors built dangerously light boats to gain an edge.
Fans can also tour boatyards and sail lofts, experience sailing through the eyes of the racers at a show and cinema, or even meet the competitors on the “sailors’ terrace.”
“The way I look at it, Newport won’t be a ‘stopover’ for us at all,” says Enright. “We’ll be wrapped up with activity the whole time. We like being ambassadors for the sport and the town. I am sure there will be plenty of public interaction.”

The “one-design” platform ensures that the race will be a contest of sailing skill instead of technology.

On May 17, the six yachts will depart, but before they leave, competitors will begin tuning up for the next leg with several “in-port” races in Newport Harbor and Rhode Island Sound. A Jumbotron and live commentary will allow spectators to view the action on the water.
To enhance the hands-on experience for budding sailors, Sail Newport is hosting outings on Newport Harbor on J/22 sailboats, with certified skippers at the helm. No experience is necessary, and life jackets will be provided. There will also be live concerts and an “exploration zone” with interactive exhibits on marine life, sailing, ocean conservation, wind, water and weather experiences, and marine technology.
“It’s an opportunity for Newport to show the world that it actually is sailing’s capital,” Enright says. “By coming to this stopover, you get to be part of Newport’s yachting rejuvenation. This will be the biggest sailing event in Newport in the last 30 years.”

Newport, RI (April 19, 2015) -  As the Volvo Ocean Race fleet left Brazil for Newport, RI today, led by American Team Alvimedica, race fans gathered @the Deck on Waites Wharf in Newport.  Guests at the Heineken party watched what Rhode Island has been waiting and preparing two years for - the race headed to its only North American stopover in Newport.

 The fleet of Volvo Ocean 65s are on their way to  Newport for a twelve-day public celebration
 in the Ocean State May 5 - 17 at Fort Adams State Park. The event will include shore side activities, team compounds , concerts, entertainment, a marine Exploration Zone and racing within yards of the shore line.

Under a year ago, a young and inexperienced Team Alvimedica sailed out of Newport, RI on a Transatlantic training run to Europe to prepare for the start of the Volvo Ocean Race. Ten months later, skipper Charlie Enright, 30, of Bristol, RI, and his crew have logged more than 40,000 ocean miles and now have their sights set on winning the 5,000-mile leg to their homeport.

In excruciatingly light conditions at the start in Itajai, Enright and crew eked out a narrow lead at the first mark in the team's quest to be the first to Newport. Due to the light in shore breeze, the race committee changed a portion of the ln-shore loop to send the boats offshore more quickly in what will hopefully be more favorable racing.  Alvimedica led the pack out of Itajai on their way home to the U.S.

"It will be very exciting to see family and friends and hopefully the massive crowds of people that await us," Enright said before docking out. "The team is in a good place, we have been training in the right direction, and we're poised to have a good leg."

"I have been looking forward to this leg since the start. We feel really privileged
to do this race and in addition it comes to Newport, which makes it really special for me.  The maritime industry is a big part of the economy in Rhode Island and I know everyone is looking forward to our arrival. I think there will be big crowds on the water and on the land when we get there. It's a real homecoming."

Enright is joined onboard by fellow Rhode Islander Nick Dana, 29, of Newport who is the boat captain and bowman. The team's Onboard Reporter is Amory Ross, 30, of Newport.  Team co-founder and watch captain is Mark Towill, 26, of Kanehoe, HI, who after his years at Brown University with Enright, calls Rhode Island his second home.

Amory Ross is excited to share the team's stories and images over the next two weeks as the team races toward home. "There is something very romantic about sailing home. Any time you come home from a long trip, it's always a good feeling to return home. It's a story I am really looking forward to tell.  To have the added incentive os sailing to Rhode Island is a very special thing."

With Newport as the team's official homeport, the team is certain to be pushing themselves to the limit to beat the fleet home. This is where the young team trained and set out from 10 months ago. The team has since logged about 40,000 miles and grown together as a team and steadily improved their performance since the start of the Volvo Ocean Race last October.

 "It's really a dream come true to be able to sail into Narragansett Bay as part of this race. Seeing the Newport Bridge from Rhode Island Sound will be pretty surreal. That will be the moment when it all kicks in for me. It's a big moment for me - it's where I grew up sailing - and it' a big moment for our team. It's where we did two transatlantics last summer and that's where our team started coming together."

Once the fleet arrives in Newport, a 12-day public celebration will be hosted by Sail Newport, Rhode Island's Public Sailing Center, the State of Rhode Island, its Department of Environmental Management, The City of Newport and Discover Newport. Events will include entertainment, a marine Exploration Zone, kids' activities, a food court, team compounds, Heineken Docks beer garden, sponsor pavilions, a theater, up-close viewing of the race boats during Pro-Am and In-Port racing and the Leg Start to Lisbon on May 17 all from Fort Adams State Park.

Newport Marathon

The Newport Marathon will take place on October 11, 2015 and feature all of the beauty and grandeur the City By The Sea has to offer. The only marathon and half-marathon in Newport, the course is simply astounding: winding ocean-side roads, miles of waterfront views and sweeping vistas of the grand mansions along Bellevue Avenue.

The races will begin at 7:30 AM in Newport, Rhode Island and travel through the city, as well as neighboring, Middletown. The race will utilize a USATF-certified course and can be used as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon and all other major marathon events.

Audrain Automobile Museum

The Audrain Automobile Museum, located at 222 Bellevue Avenue, Newport was established in the fall of 2014 with the mission of becoming one of the most highly regarded automotive museums in New England.

A car museum is quintessential Americana, nothing less than an ode to the nations love affair with the automobile.  The most fervid moments are fully captured at the Audrain Automobile Museum in Newport.

The automobile collections on display include some of the rarest and most remarkable vehicles in history, ranging from the beginning of the 20th century to modern day.  The entire collection is never on display at any one time.  Each temporary exhibition features 15-20 cars.  This allows visitors and members to enjoy a new experience every 3-4 months as the theme of each installation is changed.

Now exhibiting the "Supercar, basically that is the car that has one purpose, and that is to go insanely fast!  It is not meant to go to the food store, it's meant to hold two people and go really fast and make a statement when you show up at your destination," sums up Matthew Newton, the museum's at large curator.

A Great Summer Season Opening!

On Thursday, May 22 the NMAI opened for Summer Season 2014 with the debut of a new exhibition, Norman Rockwell and his Contemporaries!  This exhibition has already been widely popular with both critics and museum visitors, it features artists such as: John Falter, John Clymer, Mead Shaeffer, Stevan Dohanos, Frank Schoonover, JC Leyendecker, N.C. Wyeth, and of course, Norman Rockwell. For more information on this new exhibition.

Our Summer hours are now in full swing, adding three extra days a week for you, your family, and friends to see this new exciting record-breaking exhibtion; as well as a chance to visit The American Muse exhibition continued from last May due to public demand, original illustrations from My Little Pony: Under the Sparkling Sea by Mary Jane Begin, and selections from our American Imagist Collection. Come visit the NMAI during our extended Summer hours, Thursdays - Sundays 11am - 5pm, no need for reservations. The exhibition is also available for viewing on Wednesdays by advance reservation for groups of 6 visitors or more.


The NMAI recently added a new statue to our NMAI Sculpture Collection! The Vigil of Rizpah by Joseph Mozier is now available for viewing in our Tiffany Loggia. Another Mozier sculpture, the noted  work entitled Jeptha's Daughter is on exhibit in The Marble Hall.

Installing a statue is much more complicated and involved than one may think. When Rizpah was delivered we were shocked to discover that she weighed 1860 lbs, just short of 2,000lb, a literal ton! Her weight ruled out manually carrying nearly a ton of marble  into Vernon Court and onto her pedestal. Other avenues had to be considered.

The solution? A huge forklift was carefully guided down the pathway leading to the entrance of the Tiffany Loggia, with only inches of clearance on either side. Rizpah's crate was slid onto the forklift attachment and slowly lifted up and over the marble steps and gently placed inside the building.
From the machine's extended reach over the steps, to the clearance of the crate in the doorway, to the width of the forklift to fit down the pathway, everything was thoughtfully planned. As anticipated, every measurement miraculously just barely fit to the great credit of the sculpture erection  team.

However it appeared, surprisingly that was the easist part. She was too heavy to be manually lifted onto her pedestal. Instead, a scaffolding was assembled inside the Loggia (very skillfully, to avoid the track lighting as well as the restored murals). A pulley system was installed and stratigically placed around the statue, supporting her delicatly so that pieces would not be snapped off by her own weight when lifted. Instead of being placed onto the pedestal,  it was actually slid beneath her, and then she was lowered down onto it.

A big thank you to the team assembled who volunteered their helping hands, advice, and experience in installing our new statue!


The NMAI is pleased to announce our recent participation in the Brandywine River Museum of Art’s latest exhibition, A Date with Art: the Buiness of Illustrated Calendars. Works from the NMAI's permanent American Imagist Collection were featured, including Maxfield Parrish's Venetian Lamplighters (1922), Reveries (1926), and Sunup, Little Brook Farm (1942).

"To a 1920s audience, Parrish's calendar scenes were magical windows to a world that glowed with fairies, exotic lights, and lush scenes rendered with almost three-dimensional realism. The glowing blue-sky in "The Venetian Lamplighter" (1922) is equally striking in the original painting and its calendar counterpart. Even Parrish's more pedestrian views of New England landscapes and ordinary homes - seen in 1929 and 1945 calendars - still have that unearthy depth and lights." - John Chambless, Chester County Press

"Howard Pyle, Maxfield Parrish, Norman Rowckwell and N.C. Wyeth - foremost illustrators in the first half of the 20th century - created some of their best-known images for advertising calendars. Calendars hung in millions of homes, shops, and offices, providing artists with an opportunity to disseminate their work to a much broader audience than that for books or magazines. A Date with Art: The Business of Illustrated Calendars introduces visitors to the once-thriving, lucrative business of illustrated calendars. From Parrish's haunting work for General Electric's Edison Mazda Brand to Norman Rockwell's iconic images for the Boy Scouts of America, calendar images contributed greatly to an artist's popular repuation. Yet just as these for artists reaped financial benefit and fame by creating art for calendars, the connection to cocmmercial venures at times undermined their critical repuations as artists. This exhibition will reveal the various ways in which Pyle, Parrish, Rockwell, and Wyeth integrated calendar works into their calendar work into their careers, adapting to shifting views of contemporary art, illustration, and business."

Norman Rockwell and his Contemporaries is a thematic exploration of artworks by Rockwell and his peers: those influenced by Rockwell and those who influenced the Master himself. The most noted artist-illustrators of his time were colleagues, classmates, and friends who lived and worked in nearby artist communites. The illustrators reflected and molded American society by depicting prototypical themes still held dear today. Featured alongside Rockwell are: John Clymer, Stevan Dohanos, John Falter, George Hughes, J.C. Leyendecker, and more.



Mary Jane Begin's new book My Little Pony: Under the Sparkling Sea, as the title suggests, is a My Little Pony story with an aquatic theme. Her bold and intense use of colors in the underwater environment and nuanced depictions of the facial expressions convey the characters' wonderment at the strange and new world they experience. Illustrations from this book are now on display for viewing and for sale in the Lower Level galleries to benefit the NMAI.



Continuing for the 2014 Summer Season, this exhibition features the illustrative works of Charles Dana Gibson, Harrison Fisher, Howard Chandler Christy, Walter Granville Smith, James Montgomery Flagg, Albert Beck Wenzell, and others of their Gilded Age Illustrator colleagues, each demonstrating their own particular notion of the Classic American female Beauties from the Gilded Age.

The National Museum of American Illustration is a nonprofit, independent, educational and aesthetic organization. It is located in Newport, RI on Bellevue Avenue at Vernon Court (1898), a Carrere and Hastings designed Beaux-Arts adaptation of an 18th century French chateau. It is the first national museum devoted exclusively to American Illustration art. Illustration consists of original artwork created to be reproduced in books, magazines, newspapers, and advertisements. "Golden Age" paintings by such luminaries as Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, NC Wyeth, JC Leyendecker, and 150 others are displayed in "Gilded Age" architecture, creating a unique union of architecture and art - a national treasure. Freddie McGregor to headline Festival - Villa 120 Best Boutique Hotel in Newport!

Reggae veteran Freddie McGregor willheadline the fifth annual Newport Reggae Festival on Saturday August 9th at the Newport Yachting Centre off America's Cup Avenue.

Joining McGregor will be John Brown's Body, Mighty Mystic, Etana, New Kingston and Soul Rebel Project.

McGregor has spanned every stylistic shift in Jamaican music since the late 1960's, from ska and rocksteady to roots reggae and lovers rock.

Born in Jamaica, McGregor's recording includes the clasics :Rastaman Camp" "I am a Rasta", "Mark of the Beast", "Sergeant Brown" and "Walls of Jericho".  His 1980 album "Bobby Bobylon"established McGregor as a star.  He followed that with the hit single "Big Ship" and extended his creative hot streak to an international audience with "Push Come to Shove" in 1986 and a cover of the Main Ingredient's "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely".   His latest album release is "Di Captain".

A pioneer progressive rock band will perform two if its classic albums in their entirety plus an encore of greatest hits during "An Evening with Yes" on Sunday, July 13th at the Newport Yachting Centre.

The English rock band's history spans 45 years and 20 studio albums, including chart topping hits such as "Roundabout" and "Owner of a Lonely Heart", Nine of the band's 20 studio albums have reached the top 10 on either the UK or US charts.

Known for its expansive songs, esoteric lyrics, elaborate album art and live stage sets. Yes will perform "Fragile" (1971) and "Close to the Edge" (1972) during its performance in Newport, as part of the Newport Concert Series formerly known as teh Sunset Music Series.

The current, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist SteveHowe, drummer Alan White and keyboardist Geoff Downes.

Barenaked Ladies will perform on Friday July 18th.  The multi Grammy Award nominees and seven time Juno Award winning band has sold more than 15 million records.  The Canadian Band also is behind the theme song for the hit show "The Big Bang Theory".

Trombone Shorty to perform at Newport Jazz Festival - 2nd August 2014 - Villa 120 - Newport RI.

Trombone Shorty performed with his band Orleans Avenue at Fort Adams in 2011 and is returning to Newport this summer to perform at the Jazz Festival on Sunday 2nd August.

The 28 year old formerly known as Troy Andrews earned his nickname more than two decades ago, back when he used to walk the street of New Orleans, playing trombone that was twice his size.

"I want to bring Mardi Gras to the world", Shorty said, calling on his way to a show in New Jersey.  It's a mission he takes seriously, whether he's playing for President Barack Obama at the White House with Mick Jagger, or performing at the NBA All-Star Game halftime show with Earth, Wind & Fire, with his mix of jazz, blues, rock, soul and of course, Cajun and Creole.

Newport Concert Series/Chris Young - Villa 120 Boutique Hotel Newport RI

American Country Awards winner Chris Young and special guest Courtney Cole will perform Saturday September 20th as part of the Newport Concert Series at the Newport Yachting Centre, 4 Commerical Wharf.

Young received national recognition in 2006 when he won the singing competition on the TV show "Nashville Star".  Recorded singles including "The Man I Want to Be",  "Voices", "Getting You Home", "Tomorrow", "You" and "When She's On".


Young was nominated by the Country Music Association for New Artist of the Year in 2007 and received a grammy nomination for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 2010.  He was named the American Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2011, when he also won Single of the Year!

Bill Cosby comes to Newport RI - Villa 120 Best Bed&Breakfast/Boutique Hotel in Newport

Bill Cosby will perform a doubleheader on Sunday August 17th as part of the Newport Comedy Series.

In addition to the previously announced 7.30 p.m. show, Cosby will perform at 4 p.m. at the Newport Yachting Centre, 4 Commercial Wharf.

Due to demand the second show was added.  People will have options to see this comedy icon in what may very well be the highlight of the 2014 series.

Cosby has entertained generations with his comedy routines albums and best-selling books such as "Fatherhood".  His comedy transends age, gender and cultural barriers.

Sunset Music Series NOW Newport Concert Series! Villa 120 Newport RI

The Sunset Music Series has changed its name and announced it first concert of the 2014 season.

What now will be known as the Newport Concert Series will take place from late May through October at the Newport Yachting Centre off America's Cup Avenue.  The series will begin Saturday May 31st, with Rusted Root and The Wailers, who will be performing Bob Marley's 1984 album "Legend" in it entirety in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of its release.

The Newport Yachting Centre is the perfect venue for regae and will be brought back several times this summer.

Gates will open at 4 p.m. Local reggae ban The Ravers will open at 4.30 p.m., followed by Adam Ezra, Rusted Root and then The Wailers.

Tall Ship - Oliver Hazard Perry - Villa 120 Newport RI

The soon to be launched Tall Ship Oliver Hazard Perry has scheduled thre voyages in September and is looking for crew members.  In its first voyage, the 200 foot sailing school vessel will take part in the Star Spangled Spectacular in Baltimore celebrating the 200th anniversary of the national anthem. 

The two other voyages feature courses in navigation and meteorology on trips to Bermuda & Portland, Maine.  Professional instructors form Ocean Navigation magazine will present the courses.

Those signing up for any of the voyages will go as participants, rather than passengers.  They will act as crew learning to operate the largest civilian sale training vessel in the United States.

The steel-hulled Tall Ship is in its final construction stages at Senesco Marine at Quonset Point in North Kingstown.  It is scheduled to be moved to Newport Shipyard in April, where its rigging will be installed.  The vessel is due to set sail in July.

For its round-trip voyage to Baltimore the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry will depart Newport on September 6th, arrive in Baltimore on September 11, leave from Baltimore September 15 and arrive back in Newport on September 20.

The voyage will put the ship and its crew in the middle of an eight-day festivl saluting the writing of the "Star-Spangled Banner" by Francis Scott Key.

"This is an unrepeatable opportunity to see Fort McHentry in Baltimore the same way as Francis McHenry saw it - from the deck of a Tall Ship.

Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island, the nonprofit organization behind the ship and its educational programs.

The ship will berth at Baltimore's Inner Harbor; the centre of the 'Spectacular" activities that incude air shows, concerts, fireworks, festivals and ship tours.

The Breakers 'New' Welcome Centre - Villa 120 Newport RI

The Breakers Mansion 'new' Welcome Centre is not simply a victory for the Presevation Society but a victory for Newport itself!   The $4.2 million, 3,650 square foot welcome centre has been carefully designed to blend in with its surrounds, situated in a grove of trees, so it does not detract from the majestic Breakers estate.  Inside, the one-story, pavilion-style building will offer high-tech and assessible amenities including ticket sales, information about the society's other attractions, restrooms and a 'servery' where pre-packaged sandwiches, snacks and beverages can be purchased.

These are the kinds of amenities visitors to historic sites around the world are accustomed to.  

The Breakers draws more then 4,000 visitors a year to Newport which makes the mansion the Preservation Society’s most visited property in Newport, and the fourth most-visited museum in New England surpassed only by three major attractions in Boston.
