Multiple Grammy-award winner Tony Bennett will return to Newport on August 28th as part of the Sunset Music Series at the Newport Yachting Centre.
Bennett, who closed the Newport Jazz Festival during its 55th anniversary celebration in 2009, has sold more than 50 million records worldwide. The singer of jazz and pop standards has won 17 Grammy Awards, along with the organisation's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. He also has been recognized with two Emmy Awards and is a Kennedy Centre honoree.
Raised in New York City, Bennett became popular nationally with the No. hit "Because of You" in 1951. He reached his first artistic peak in the late 1950's with albums such as "The Beat of My Heart" and "Basie Swings, Bennett Sings". In 1962, Bennett recorded his signature song. "I Left My Heart in San Francisco".
In early 1990's, with the help of his sons, he reinvented himself and expanded his audience to include viewers of "Late Night with David Letterman". "The Simpsons" and various programs on MTV, while keeping his musical style intact.
