Gay Wedding Venue - Villa 120 Newport RI - NewportOut.com

August 1st the state began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.  Newport resident Lionel Pires, owner of NewportOut.com hopes to become the go-to resource site for the gay community.

Newport is already ranked as one of the top destination wedding locations in the country for straight couples, traction is already building for the city to become a major market for gay weddings.

A recent Reuters article out of London listed Newport as the number one up and coming destination in the world for same-sex marriage ceremonies, coming ahead of locations in New Zealand, France, Denmark, and others.  That's not the only list where Newport is named a gay wedding destination - a Google search brought up multiple lists on which Newport is ranked in the top 10.

Newport has been a haven of diversity and acceptance since its earliest days, is already seen as a gay-friendly resort town, but it doesn't receive the same level of attention as locations such as Fire Island in New York or Provincetown on Cape Cod.

Newport is unique with its cultural history, events and amazing natural beauty.

East meets West - 18th annual Newport Flower Show - Villa 120 Bed&Breakfast Newport RI

In many parts of the world the green jade is a symbol of love and virtue.  In ancient China, it was believed to promote wisdom and ensure a long life.  That symbol is at the heart of the 18th annual Newport Flower Show.

I went to the Flower Show yesterday and was amazed by the Asian Dragon, made of plant materials by the Preservation Society of Newport County for the recent Boston Flower Show.  Dragon are found in mythology and folklore throuhout Asian cultures.  In China, dragon lore dates back several thousand years.  Typically, the dragon symbolizes imperial power and cntrl over anturl forces, particularly bodies of water, rinfall hurricanes and floods.  The Chinese dragon also portends good luck;  the huge pearl held in its claw is associated with good fortune, wealth and success.

Hitomi Gilliam, an internationally renowned floral artist, returns to Newport for the 18th annual Flower Show.  She will showcase work inspired by Ikebana and Zen appreciation of nature.

This demonstration will show how containers are as important as their contents (plant material).  Because of their inherent beauty, it is critical as to what plant material is chosen.  Choices should be admired on their own as well as how they contribute to the total design.  No matter what the syle of your home, an Asian design will not only be suitable but it wil be a loely addition to your decor.

Merrill is a Garden Club of America Approved Floral Design Judge, and a National Garden Club Master Judge in Horicuture and Design and current President of the Newport Garden Club.

Spagnolo is a Garden Club of America Design Judge, has won many GCA awards in design, photography and botanical arts, and presently is serving as chairwoman of photography for the Newport Flower Show.

National Museum of American Illustration - 29th June Mary Jane Begin Book Signing - Newport RI Villa 120 Intimate Event Venue

June 7,  2013
'MY LITTLE PONY' BOOK SIGNING BY ACCLAIMED ILLUSTRATOR, EDUCATOR,
& AUTHOR
MARY JANE BEGIN

On Saturday, June 29, 2013, the National Museum of American Illustration will host a book signing by acclaimed illustrator, educator, and author Mary Jane Begin, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The book signing coincides with an inaugural exhibition of Mary Jane's original illustrations from the newly released My Little Pony book, titled Under the Sparkling Sea.

Mary Jane Begin has twenty-five years of experience as a professional illustrator and notable faculty member at the Rhode Island School of Design. In 2008, she was the first living illustrator to have an exhibition at the NMAI. On that occasion her featured artworks had been created for the 100th anniversary edition of the beloved children's book classic by Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in The Willows, and a Willow Buds prequel series she wrote and illustrated, titled Willow Buds. Also exhibited were books illustrated by Mary Jane  such as R is for Rhode Island Red, a retelling of The Sorcerer's Apprentice, A Mouse Told His Mother, and others.

Doubtlessly based upon an impeccable story-telling ability and extraordinary artistic skills demonstrated in her previous works, Mary Jane was selected by Hasbro toys to write and illustrate My Little Pony. The book Under the Sparkling Sea, as the title suggests, is a My Little Pony story with an aquatic theme. Mary Jane does an inimitable job of portraying characters from that well known children's franchise in a setting not commonly associated with ponies. Her bold and intense use of colors in the underwater environment and nuanced depictions of the facial expressions convey the characters' wonderment at the strange and new world they experience. It is a superlative effort, already well received, and is now acknowledged at the NMAI as  "a great new classic of children's literature."

Additionally, NMAI offers 3 concurrent exhibitions:

1). The American Muse focuses on the illustrative works of Charles Dana Gibson, Harrison Fisher, Howard Chandler Christy, Walter Granville Smith, James Montgomery Flagg, Albert Beck Wenzell, and others of their colleagues each demonstrating a particular notion of classical female American beauty. Their various popular depictions or interpretations of late 19th and early 20th century beautiful American women include the Gibson Girl, the Christy Girl, the Fisher Girl, Liberty Belles, and many other notable works of that era.

2). Maxfield Parrish: The Retrospective continues due to great popular demand, with works from the Edith Wharton book, Italian Villas and their Gardens, various Edison Mazda works, and other examples from each phase of Parrish's oeuvre. NMAI has in its permanent American Imagist Collection the largest Maxfield Parrish Collection of original artworks extant, including the famous Florentine Fete murals..

3). Howard Pyle and His Brandywine Students features works by Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, and others of the Brandywine School.

Throughout the NMAI are highlights from our American Imagist Collection. Also enjoy Vernon Court, our Gilded Age mansion, and its unique architectural features, period furnishings, and the American Imagist Sculpture Collection.

It is the first national museum devoted exclusively to American illustration art. Illustration consists of original artwork created to be reproduced in books, magazines, newspapers, and advertisements. 'Golden Age' paintings by such luminaries as Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, NC Wyeth, JC Leyendecker, and 150 others are displayed in 'Gilded Age' architecture, creating a unique union of architecture and art - a national treasure. The Museum is administered by the American Civilization Foundation, a nonprofit organization with the goal to present the best possible venue for appreciating the greatest collection of illustration art - the most American of American art.

Newporters fundraising for Guatemalan orphanage - Villa 120 Best Bed & Breakfast Newport RI

Newport long time friends Nick Manson & Paul Marshall decided to head to Central America on a surfing safari last December after recently graduating from college they took off on a five month trip.

One night after three months of hitting the shores of Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama the two Rogers High School alumni learned about a fundraiser for a local orphanage - Hogar Rosa de Amor.  The home is for children, primarily abused girls, who have been taken from their home by Guatemalan authorities.

On meeting the children they were so moved they decided to beach their boards and spend two weeks volunteering at the orphanage.  "They wer so appreciative, and we learned a lot about how they were funded" said Manson.  "They were behind on their electric bills.  The workers were not getting paid - they were on the verge of being shut down!"

So the two surfing buddies, both bartenders at The Black Pearl, decided to lend another helping hand.

On Sunday they are hosting a fundraiser for orphanage at Cappy's Hillside Cafe, on Memorial Boulevard from 1-5 p.m.  The two will tend bar adn all tips and donations will go directly to the orphanage - no middle men to syphon off the proceeds!  There will also be a 50-50 raffle.

Lets go an support them!

The Art of Illustration, American Illustration Museum, Judy Goffman Cutler, Newport Rhode Island, Historic Bed and Breakfast, Villa One Twenty

Well ahead of her time, Judy Goffman Cutler recognized the true value of of American Illustrations some 50 years ago.  Goffman Cutler is the co-founder, along with her husband Laurence S. Cutler of the National Museum of American Illustration on Bellevue Avenue in Newport.  Their collections here feature illustrations from great artists such as Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, and J.C. Leyendecker.

Recently, Goffman Cutler has been involved in a project assisting George Lucas found the Cultural Arts Museum in San Francisco.  This new collection would prominently feature many similar artists of the same time period.  She has also been invovled in a project with film great Steven Spielberg, building a collection of Rockwell's art.  Lucas and Spielberg showcased their combined collections at the Smithsoniam American Art Museum in 2010.

Goffman Culter first became interested in art when she read a book her husband presented her with "Mainstreans of Modern Art" by John E. Canaday at the University of Pennsylvania.  This book influenced her to minor in art history., and in the late 1960s she began collecting illustrators.  Starting as a schoolteacher with not much to invest, her early foresight into Rockwell paintings has, in time, yielded a high return rate in the past few decades.

The Cutler's extensive collection on Bellevue Avenue is a Newport treasure not to be missed.  The museum is open Thursday through Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm, with guided tours at 3pm on Friday afternoons.  Admission to the museum is $18 for general admission, $12 for students, $16 for seniors or military, $15 for groups of 6 or more, and $8 for children aged 5 to 12.  Children under 5 are not permitted.  for more information on the museum visit their website:

Fort Adams - Newport RI, Villa One Twenty Best Bed & Breakfast

Today and Tomorrw
Historic Civil War Re-enactment at Fort Adams
Saturday/Sunday May 18 & 19 2013
There's a lot to do in Newport today!

Flame and smoke belching from cannons, officers shouting commands and soldiers clashing in mock combat...
at The Fort Adams Annual Civil War Living History Weekend.

Two exciting and informative days of history and action bring the sights and sounds of the Civil War to Newport's Historic Fort Adams this weekend.

Events begin at 10 a.m. on both days and include re-enactors carrying out dramatic simulations of assaults on Fort Adams, as well as re-creations of the daily life of soldiers and civilians during the 1860s.

Throughout the day soldiers and civilians in authentic 19th century uniforms and dress will invite the public to spend a day in their life. According to Rob McCormack, Director of the Visitor Experience at Fort Adams, "You'll experience the sights, sounds and smells of an earlier age. You can engage in learning about everything from military tactics to cooking and family life during the Civil War."

Re-enactors from all over New England and beyond are participating, representing soldiers from the Union and the Confederacy. A "Unity Village" of civilian re-enactors from both sides will share life experiences. As Rob notes, "Our Civil War Living History Weekend is a chance for families to truly immerse themselves in a place and time crucial to our country's history and interact with historical figures."

The two day schedule is filled with artillery and troop drills, dress parades, medical and surgical demonstrations, lectures, historic displays, camp life, and battles. According to Michael Pine, re-enactor, Fort Adams Trust Guide, and senior officer with the Newport Artillery Company, "You can spend as long as you like amongst the re-enactors, asking questions and observing the various exercises and demonstrations. You're welcome to experience the Union and Confederate camps as soldiers prepare for and relax after battle. Or talk to the officers at headquarters as they strategize about the day's action."

There will be hands-on activities as well, including a daily historical Scavenger Hunt with the opportunity to win prizes.

Yankee Wood Club, 1941 Cadillac, 1949 Packard

One of the great  pluses about owning a B&B is that you meet some wonderful people along the way and with these wonderful people come traditions, memories and of course receipes!  This lovely lady stayed with her husband and friends from the New England Yankee Wood Club about a month ago and we enjoyed the boys fabulous cars (1941 Cadillac & 1949 Packard) and now we can enjoy this ladies receipe - note it is great for a picnic - so come to Villa 120 - bring a picnic, wine and then drive to Ocean Drive sit by the ocean and simply enjoy!

Mangia with Micheline

In the mid 1950”s, my mother’s family decided that we needed to have a family reunion. The reunion would encompass the members of Bevelacqua and Iantosco families. My Great Grandmother Antoinetta Iantosco had three children, Uncle Mike, Uncle Leo, and my Grandmother, Michelina. Uncle Mike and Aunt Fanny had 3 children, Uncle Leo and Aunt Frances had 2 children, and my Grandmother and Grandfather had 8 children; who all had children, some of which had children of their own. So you can see this was no small event, it was a major undertaking! All of the aunts and married cousins would meet once a month for coffee and dessert, to organize the reunions. The meetings served a dual purpose; it was social gatherings that keep the family close and of course they were the planning sessions for the event. All the women paid dues that went toward the expense of the affair and they meet at different homes each month. On occasion I accompanied my mother, and remember one October meeting where they dressed in costume and partied while planning. Seeing my mother dressed as a little girl, wearing a yellow yarn pigtail wig and riding a tri-cycle is a sight I will never forget. I called my Aunt Tessie to reminisce and add some details to family planning sessions. She remembered that the meetings were held on a night that she would miss her favorite TV show, which my mother said was Peyton Place. We held the reunions are the Club 400 (where the West Valley Inn is located now). It was a great place, because we would go into the restaurant for a sit down dinner, and then go across the parking lot to the field to play games and later we would have hamburgers and hot dogs. There was only one hall back in the day and the rest of land was large enough to play baseball. Best of all in was private! We would have three-legged races, toss eggs (raw) to each other widening the distance with each toss, and pass the orange from chin to chin. There were games for the kids and for the adults. It was great fun. The reunions continued on a yearly basis until the early 1970’s. This summer, some of my cousins have arranged another reunion, and in this day of social media they have turned to Face Book to spread the word. I’m not sure how this will work as not all the family has a computer or if they do; are they on Face Book? I guess I’m just an old fashion kind of gal, but I prefer the face to face social interactions when planning events. Not to mention that it’s nice to visit with the family. Since there is no rain date and it has been planned to be outdoors, I guess we have to hang the rosary beads on the clothes line over night to ask for fair weather. Does anyone still have a clothes line? I have a great recipe for pickled eggplant to take as a side dish to a picnic. It good because it does not need to be kept refrigerated during the picnic.

Melanzane Sott’Aceto
Pickled Eggplant

1 small eggplant
1/2 cup white balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon capers, rinsed
1/2 red, yellow, orange pepper, sliced into thin strips
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon chopped fresh basil
1/4 cup virgin olive oil

Peel eggplant, slice in half, then into thin slices, turn the eggplant and slice into thin match like sticks. Place eggplant in a strainer, salt, and place a plate over it with a weigh on top of it.(can of tomatoes works great). Let stand for about 1 hour. Rinse and pat the eggplant dry. The Art of Henna & History - Villa 120 Bridal B&B, Wedding Venue

Having just had an Indian bridal party here and having observed the traditional henna painting of the Bride and Bridal party I thought it would be nice to give you a little information about the tradition.

I am now sporting henna on my hand and have been astounded at the comments, interest and compliments this traditional art has had on people I meet.

The Art and History of Henna as Bodyart

The use of Henna for body art is several centuries old at least. The people of ancient Egypt and India used this form of temporary tattoo for religious ceremonies, wedding festivals, and for simple body adornment.
What is Henna?
Henna is a plant which grows in the tropical climates of Africa, northern Australia, and southern Asia. Its leaves contain a pigment called lawsone which combines with proteins to cause staining. Because of this staining quality, Henna has been used throughout the ages to dye hair and create body art designs.
Origin of Mehandi
It is thought that Mehandi originated in the deserts of India when the people living there discovered that covering their hands and feet with colored paste from the Henna plant helped them to feel cooler. It wasn't long until a creative individual began making intricate designs with the colored paste instead of just smearing it on. The complexity of designs grew and began to take on meaning. Eventually brides began to decorate their feet and hands with henna as part of their wedding rituals.
Many other Mehandi traditions developed over time. For example, women's hands were decorated with henna at childbirth because women with intricate Mehandi designs did little household labor so as not to destroy their body art. Tattooing women's hands at weddings and childbirth allowed them a few weeks where they could bond with the new husband or new baby and not be bothered with daily household chores. The tattoos were also thought to bestow blessings and good luck.
